METHODS

Study Design and Criteria

  • Retrospective, comparative observational case series
  • Inclusion criteria: Older than 20 years of PRK group or PRK-CXL group
  • Exclusion criteria: Previous ocular or intraocular surgery
  • Exclusion criteria: Ocular abnormalities other than myopia or myopic astigmatism
  • Exclusion criteria: Central corneal thickness (CCT) of less than 460 μm
  • Exclusion criteria: Corneal endothelial cell density of less than 2000 cells/mm2
  • Exclusion criteria: Signs of keratoconus on Scheimpflug tomography

PRK-CXL group

  • CCT less than 500 μm regardless of the amount of ablation
  • Calculated ablation depth of more than 120 μm
  • Or predicted residual postoperative stromal thickness less than 300 μm

PRK alone induced

  • 1. A significant forward displacement of the peripheral posterior corneal surface
  • 2. Along with backward displacement of central posterior corneal surface, regardless of the calculation method (BFS or BFTE)

PRK Combined with a Prophylactic CXL Intervention

  • 1. Reduced the magnitude of displacement of the posterior corneal surface.
  • 2. Induced a backward displacement of the posterior corneal surface at Pre-Op. Maximum corneal elevations.
