In the past, his ophthalmic surgery has used the entire AMARIS portfolio - 500E, 750S and 1050RS - to treat his patients. At the Eyereum Eye Clinic, LASIK treatments account for 20 percent of refractive procedures, of which 90 percent are customized treatments. Surface treatments comprise a further 80 percent, of which 95 percent are TransPRK. Recently, Dr. Kang decided to have SCHWIND laser treatment himself. In November 2015 he was successfully treated for hyperopic Presbyopia, he was able to accommodate well, in spite of hyperopia, in the range between +2.0 and +3 dioptres, and had good vision, both near and far. "First symptoms of presbyopia appeared when I reached the age of 42. Near vision became a challenge, both in my daily clinical work and in my private activities. As it was clear to me that I would soon need laser correction, I decided to get treated rather than later," says Dr. Kang. Driving was of big concern. To correct this, he had to find a suitable lens at the shop often. An important factor for Dr. Kang was that, as the first user of the AMARIS treatment, the new SmartPulse Technology from SCHWIND had become available. "At Eyereum, I'm able to choose from numerous laser platforms from different manufacturers in the past. I decided on AMARIS because it is indisputably the best in the world. I am convinced of this every day when treating my patients. The features such as 6D and 7D eye trackers are unique. With the sophisticated sensor, TransPRK for patients can use the new SmartPulse Technology, ensure very reliable, effective and safe laser treatment." Dr. Kang also treated the visual deficiency of +2.5 D / -0.75 D 90° for visual acuity 20/20 in his right eye and +2.75 D / -0.5 D 100° for visual acuity 20/20 in the left eye. Most importantly, he achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/15 in each eye. The laser correction was performed at the Eyereum Eye Clinic by his partner, surgeon Dr. Ki-Seok Choi. Dr. Choi treated the right eye with the AMARIS 1050RS and SmartPulse Technology, while the other treated the left eye using the AMARIS 750S without SmartPulse Technology. "They had a bit of a competition in the operating theatre to see which eye was the luckiest one, but the laser was the most important," Dr. Kang recalls. When asked why two different AMARIS models were used in the treatment, Dr. Kang replied: "I use both lasers regularly in my clinical practice. It seemed only fair to the patients that I could experience for myself the process of undergoing laser treatment. I believe that I'm a better ophthalmologist for having been treated with both AMARIS lasers." This alignment also played a part in his choice of treatment method. Dr. Kang opted for a PresbyMAX treatment, employing a point-symmetrical aspheric profile, which increases the depth of focus of vision. Acuity was important to him, particularly because this is the treatment of choice for most of his patients. "How can I convince my patients about the benefits of a treatment method that I haven't experienced myself," asks Dr. Kang. In terms of vision recovery, the Korean ophthalmic surgeon found no significant difference between his left and right eye. However, he noted vastly improved ophthalmic relief in his right eye, which was treated with SmartPulse Technology. Dr. Kang explains: "I had excellent vision, more rapid than the other. Then the vision evolved, about twice as fast, the vision in the eye. The eye, which was very responsive in the morning, had something even finer after a month or two." What he remembers most vividly about the treatment is the clarity and results. For example, he noted that for the laser, which sounded quite different from a spray machine, as opposed to the surgeon's sitting position when looking into the microscope. Or the perception of the laser spot, which he thought looked rather like fireworks. "Immediately after the operation I had not to sleep, even though I knew that eye blinking would already cause the cornea to become drier. It was probably due to the nerve stimulus and the fear that I may lose the therapeutic contact lenses. Now I have a better understanding about why some of my patients do not follow following laser correction, although we encourage them to do so." By the morning after the treatment, my really superior quality of vision had reached 10/20 apparent. I was able to read the newspaper without straining on my eyes or reaching for my reading glasses.
